Lake Desilting

Desilting a lake involves the removal of silt, mud, debris and overgrown vegetation which can gradually accumulate in lakes. Desilting lakes is important, because the presence of these materials can be detrimental to the fertility and wildlife in a lake. Sandyfields use specialist equipment to desilt lakes to improve their oxygen levels, reduce acidity and create more lake depth to improve fish stocks.

Pond Desilting

As with lake desilting, pond desilting is also necessary - even in large garden ponds. Periodic pond desilting helps to maintain a good depth and natural oxygen levels in the water, helping you create a thriving habitat for wildlife. We are highly experienced in desilting ponds throughout the West Midlands and can advise you on the best ways to manage and maintain your pond, whatever its size.

Lake Dredging

Lake dredging is necessary to keep the water clean and healthy. The accumulation of silt and debris on a lake bed starves it of oxygen, which can then breed pollutants, excessive mineral levels and algae that can be harmful to people and wildlife. If you’re not sure how to dredge a lake, we can help. Lake dredging requires heavy-duty specialist equipment, and Sandyfields have the right machinery, experience and safety protocols for the job.

Pond Dredging

As with lakes, dredging in ponds is also essential for maintaining water quality. Pond dredging removes excess vegetation, mud, silt and other waste materials to improve oxygen levels and create more depth for wildlife.

FAQ

View our Frequently Asked Questions section to get answers on the most common questions about managing ponds and lakes in the West Midlands:

What is dredging?

Dredging is the process of removing excess materials from lakes and ponds that can be harmful to water quality and wildlife. These can include silt, mud, sand and excess or rotten vegetation, and if they’re not removed, your lake or pond will effectively become a swamp.

Sandyfields are experts in lake and pond dredging, and we are always extremely mindful of ensuring minimal disruption to existing wildlife. Talk to Sandyfields today to find out about dredging services to improve the water quality of your pond or lake.

How do you dredge a lake?

Dredging a lake requires extremely specialist equipment and robust safety practices. It’s definitely a job that requires a professional team with solid experience.

Sandyfields use heavy duty machinery, including 13 tonne excavators and dump trucks, to dredge and remove debris from a lake bed, and to create a sump hole to improve water flow and drainage. We can also clear and remove or re-use surrounding trees and vegetation.

Any organic materials we remove from a lake can be spread over nearby fields or landscaped and reinstated with grass seed to ensure minimal waste.

How do you dredge a pond?

Pond dredging follows the same practice as lake dredging, but may require different machinery depending on the size of your pond and what access to the site is like. Because we have a wide range of equipment, we can usually provide pond dredging services for even the smallest garden ponds, as well as larger ponds such as those found on farms.

What type of equipment is used for lake and pond dredging and desilting?

Having access to a wide range of equipment, and a highly skilled team to operate it, are both essential parts of any successful dredging and desilting project. Sandyfields use a number of specialist vehicles and machines on lakes and ponds, including two 13-tonne excavators and a 14-tonne excavator fitted with a hydraulic tree shear to remove lakeside vegetation if required, along with two dump trucks and large desilting pumps.

What happens if I don’t dredge my pond or lake?

Ponds, lakes and any other natural water features must be desilting and dredged every few years. Both dredging and desilting are essential to the health and quality of the water and the wildlife within it. If they’re not maintained, ponds and lakes can eventually become swamps because they don’t have the oxygen, water quality or depth required to maintain a healthy environment.

Which areas do you cover?

Sandyfields are based just outside Wolverhampton in the West Midlands, and we provide expert pond and lake desilting and dredging services for domestic and commercial clients in areas like Bridgnorth, Albrighton, Pattingham, Dudley, Kingswinford, Stourbridge, Cannock, Stafford, Bilston, Walsall, Tamworth and Lichfield. We also travel further around the West Midlands.

What happens to materials when they are removed?

Sandyfields are committed to environmentally friendly practices, so wherever possible, the soil and earth we remove from your site can usually be reused elsewhere, such as to create embankment or arrange for it to be disposed of in an environmentally friendly way.

For a free, no-obligation quote or to discuss your tree surgery, groundworks or landscaping requirements in more detail, please contact Sandyfields and we’ll come back to you as soon as we can. We look forward to hearing from you.
