FAQ

Take a look at our Frequently Asked Questions section to get answers on the most common groundworks questions:

What does groundwork involve?

Groundworks refer to any type of project that involves moving ground. More specifically, groundwork is the crucial first stage of preparing a site for a new construction project. This could involve everything from removing vegetation and trees on the site, to digging beneath the topsoil and levelling the site ready for building footings to be installed.

Groundworks projects can also involve demolishing existing buildings on the site, digging out ground for basements, creating trenches to install septic tanks or drainage provisions, commercial landscaping and removing the excavated topsoil and sub-soil to be recycled or reused elsewhere.

Why is it important to use an expert groundworks contractor?

The weight of any type of building relies entirely on its foundations, so sturdy and structurally sound groundworks are absolutely essential.

By helping to create the layout and structure of a building, groundwork is not only a vital first step of any new construction project, but is a critical part of supporting the building’s weight. For these reasons, it’s important to use a highly qualified and experienced groundworks contractor with proven experience of working on all types of site.

Your groundworks contractor is responsible for all aspects of a groundworks project, including the initial evaluation, complete planning of the groundwork required, laying out all aspects of the project to a client, and the completion of the work specified, all in accordance with the latest health and safety regulations.

As an expert groundworks contractor operating throughout the West Midlands, Sandyfields have more than 30 years’ experience, so you can trust us to carry out your project with the utmost professionalism, safety and efficiency.

What do foundations cover?

Foundations are the basic for all types of domestic and commercial construction project, as well as some types of landscaping. Solid foundations provide structural strength and support to a building, to ensure its load doesn’t split, settle into the ground or become unbalanced.

Not only do foundations keep a structure secure, especially during adverse weather such as high winds or storms, but they also support the entire building’s load in a balanced way and prevent it from being weakened by moisture or other environmental conditions.

A groundworks contractor may also create foundations structures to improve the appearance of a building or outdoor space. As well as building footings, foundations can be created for driveways, block flooring, beam flooring, piling, underpinning and flagging.

Can groundworks take place in all weather conditions?

Yes. In very rare cases where we believe the weather might compromise the safety of our team, we may need to wait for it to improve. But generally, as all groundworks involve work outdoors, we are completely prepared for the realities of the British weather!

What if my site has variable ground conditions?

That’s not a problem. Sandyfields work on sites with a broad variety of topographical conditions, and we have the right vehicles, equipment and machinery to be able to level out and excavate all types of soil and earth from your site.

What type of equipment is used?

Having access to a broad range of equipment, and a highly skilled team to operate it, are both essential parts of any groundwork projects.

Sandyfields use a number of specialist vehicles and machines for excavations, site clearance and landscaping projects, including a 13 tonne excavator, a Caterpillar D5 LGP bulldozer with wide and long tracks, and several dump trucks. We also have specialist equipment for the removal of trees and tree stumps.

What happens to materials when they are removed?

Sandyfields are committed to environmentally friendly practices, so wherever possible, the soil and earth we remove from your site can usually be reused elsewhere, such as to create embankments. With any demolition work, we can either crush and reuse the material on-site, or arrange for it to be disposed of in an environmentally friendly way.

Does site clearance require any permissions?

Possibly, particularly where tree clearance or tree stump removal is required, since the removal of some trees does require specific permission. Sandyfields will work with you to determine the best course of action for your site clearance. We’ll carry out evaluations, prepare surveys and reports if required, and obtain any necessary permissions.

Which areas do you cover?

Sandyfields are based just outside Wolverhampton in the West Midlands, and we provide expert groundworks contractor services for domestic and commercial clients in areas such as Shropshire, Herefordshire, Staffordshire and Worcestershire.
